According to FM 6-0 (COMMANDER AND STAFF ORGANIZATION AND OPERATIONS), Appendix C (“Rehearsals”) Paraph C-1: “A rehearsal is a session in which the commander and staff or unit practices expected actions Tactics to improve performance during execution (ADP 5-0). Rehearsals allow leaders and their Soldiers to practice key aspects of the concept of operations. These actions help Soldiers orient themselves to their environment and the planned actions of other units before executing an operation.”
There are four types of rehearals:
· Backbrief.
· Combined arms rehearsal.
· Support rehearsal.
· Battle drill or SOP rehearsal
There are a variety of techniques for executing rehearsals. These include:
· Network
· Map
· Sketch Map
· Digital Terrain Model
· Terrain Model
· Key Leader
· Full Dress
Choosing the right rehearsal method depends on time available, resources and operations security risk, but each provides different value in terms of the amount of understanding gained, as illustrated by figure C-1.
