It’s been a quick week. We tried to keep the posts shorter, as we’ve noticed they’ve been getting a bit longer and less a “breakfast table read.” Drop us a line at dailydoseofdoctrine@gmail.com to let us know what you think
So, we covered two major aspects of sustainment: The 8 Principles of Sustainment, plus a basic overview of the elements. Next week, we’ll hit each element in detail. Turns out there’s more to Army healthcare than a 68W to pass out Joetrin!
But first, here’s a quick review of this week’s Big Chunks and Major Takeaways:

The major takeaways:
Definition: Sustainment is the provision of logistics, financial management, personnel services, and health service support necessary to maintain operations until successful mission completion. Sustainment is accomplished through the coordination, integration, and synchronization of resources from the strategic level through the tactical level in conjunction with our joint and multinational partners. (ADP 4-0, Chapter 1 preamble).

The 8 Principles:
Anticipation is the ability to foresee operational requirements and initiate necessary actions
Continuity is the uninterrupted provision of sustainment across all levels of war.
Responsiveness is the ability to react to changing requirements and respond to meet the needs to maintain support.
Improvisation is the ability to adapt sustainment operations to unexpected situations or circumstances affecting a mission. It includes creating, arranging, or fabricating resources to meet requirements.
Simplicity means processes and procedures to minimize the complexity of sustainment.
Integration is combining all of the sustainment elements within operations assuring unity of command and effort.
Survivability is all aspects of protecting personnel, weapons, and supplies while simultaneously deceiving the enemy (JP 3-34).
Economy is providing sustainment resources in an efficient manner that enables the commander to employ all assets to the greatest effect possible
